Queen Victoria Market Fruit Stall
A bus stop three doors away whisks me into the middle of Queen Victoria Market, a vast, vibrant centre of luscious food officially opened in March, 1878 and going stronger than ever.
Queen Vic is the largest open air market in the southern hemisphere with almost one thousand traders selling everything from local fresh produce, exotic fruit, vegetables, local and imported gourmet foods, meat, fish and poultry, to hardware, manchester, shoes, artifacts and souvenirs. Lovely flowers too. Almost 50% of the area is for the sale of fresh produce, seafood and delicatessen products.
On Sundays, it’s relaxed and comfortable with Queen Street, which runs down the middle of the market, closed off to cars and converted into an outdoor cafe area.
