What’s with the Plastic Wrap?

Fruit Stall at Queen Vic Market

Fruit Stall at Queen Vic Market

It’s just a short bus ride to the Queen Victoria Market for me, almost from my front door right into the market itself, and very handy for a little shopping on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. I don’t bother with Saturdays as the crowds are always large and I prefer some personal space when I’m shopping.

Tuesdays is the best for seafood. On the other days I get the best deal in fresh, tasty fruit and vegetables. Of late however, I’ve noticed more of the fruit stalls putting their produce into plastic containers. Why is that?

Do the stallholders imagine we will be more disposed to buy our tomatoes if they’re ensconced in little boxes and our cucumbers are wrapped in plastic? If I want my fruit and vegetables in containers I may as well go to the supermarket.

The chief attraction of Queen Vic Market is the ability to pick up an orange from the Riverina or a pear from Pakenham and feel it before I buy a few kilos.

I didn’t buy these dinky little boxes of cherry tomatoes but instead came home with my shopping buggy laden with 8k of Romas which I bought loose (and touchable) and ate a half dozen or so on the bus ride home. Yum!

They’re perfect. Firm, smooth-skinned and pink, turning to red in colour. They were flown in from further north, not hot-housed here. Well worth the extra couple of dollars.
