Bread, Beer and Cheese

Sometimes there’s nothing so tasty as some bread, beer and cheese.

These are our earliest foods and I’m sure the simple pleasure of a creamy cheese, a crisp loaf and a mug of local brew is just the same for me as it was for some ancient Sumerian sitting down for a spot of lunch.

The staple crop of ancient farmers around the world was always grain, in Mesopotamia, the chief crop was barley. In the province of Sumer they made barley cakes, barley bread and of course, beer. Cheese was a staple and they cultivated lettuce, cucumbers, radishes, beets and chickpeas.

I can enjoy a baguette with cheese, lettuce, onion and a slice of smoked ham (the Sumerians raised pigs) too. Washed down with a beer.

I came across an ancient prayer to Ninkasi, the Goddess of Brewing, which is in actuality the instructions for making beer. Have a look at an Ancient Beer Recipe
